From Education Support to a Career in Crane Operations

Shaaban Mawimbi is 20 years old and lost both of his parents at the age of six. He was subsequently raised by his aunt. SEET supported Shaaban with his primary education needs and later helped him undertake a professional driving course. In 2020, he moved to Pemba, Zanzibar, where he secured employment as a crane operator. Today, Shaaban is proud of his career and grateful to everyone who supported him along the way. “I am very proud of my job. I am very thankful to all who supported me on my way to this opportunity.” Shaaban's journey demonstrates how access to education, skills training and opportunity can help young people build independent and productive lives.

A Journey Towards Recovery and Independence

Salum Fadhili – Buguruni, Dar es Salaam Salum Fadhili lives in Buguruni, Dar es Salaam, with his wife and three children. His journey towards recovery began after years of substance use and the social isolation that accompanied it. Salum became involved in injecting drug use in 1998. During this difficult period, he experienced significant challenges, including isolation from his family and wider community. SEET established a self-help group for people who use drugs, providing a safe space for members to share experiences, encourage one another and discuss the challenges associated with recovery. Salum found the group particularly helpful in his journey towards stopping drug use. With the support of his friends and the encouragement he received through the group, Salum eventually stopped injecting drugs. Afterwards, he began learning to drive using a friend's vehicle. He hopes to undertake formal driving training in the future and obtain an official driving certificate and licence. Salum's experience highlights the importance of peer support, community-based programmes and opportunities for skills development in helping people rebuild their lives.

From Skills Training to Self-Employment

Abdallah shaaban – Vingunguti, Dar es Salaam Abdallah Shaaban is 20 years old and lives in Vingunguti, Dar es Salaam. He lost both of his parents to HIV/AIDS at the age of nine. He and his sister were subsequently cared for by their grandmother. SEET began supporting Abdallah in 2016, providing assistance with his basic education needs, including school fees, a school uniform and stationery. SEET also provided emergency food support to his family when needed. In 2021, SEET supported Abdallah to receive tailoring training. He successfully completed the training and qualified as a tailor later that year. Following his training, Health Tanzania Foundation, a U.S.-based non-profit organisation, donated a sewing machine to Abdallah. This support enabled him to begin working independently. Today, Abdallah is self-employed and able to meet his living expenses while also contributing to the needs of his grandmother. “I am now self-employed and manage to cover my living costs and support my grandmother too. I will never forget what SEET has done for me. Abdallah's story shows how education, vocational training and access to the right tools can create pathways towards economic independence.
